Non-Latina women with IPV histories also had worse health across many indicators compared to non-abused women, but the differences were not as pronounced. For example, for non-Latina women, SF-36 scores ranged from a mean of 0.96 to 3.87 points lower for women with abuse histories compared to non-abused women. In adjusted models, women who reported any exposure to IPV reported worse health compared to non-abused women . Multivariable models included indicator variables for the main effects of IPV exposure and Hispanic ethnicity and their interaction term to allow estimation of the relationship between lifetime IPV and current health separately for Latina and non-Latina women. In these models, the exposed group included women with any IPV since age 18 according to the BRFSS or WEB questions and the unexposed group comprised women without such histories.

When addressing women’s reproductive concerns, such as pregnancy and childbirth, employers tend to restrict the activities of women through mechanisms such as mandatory rest periods or prohibition of women in certain jobs . For many occupations, the workplace is essentially a male domain, in that everything from work schedules to equipment is designed to accommodate the needs of the average male worker (Messing & de Grosbois, 2001; Messing, Lippel, Demers, & Mergler, 2000; Norton, 1994). In many industries, rather than accommodating differences in physical strength by incorporating adjustable elements, women are typically assigned to tasks that are considered “lighter” than the tasks that are assigned to men . However, this “light” work is often repetitious, demanding higher levels of dexterity and visual acuity, and requiring long periods of standing.
Another theory is that women are choosing to forgo careers in STEM to attain better work-family balance—rather than being pushed out by bias. Several new studies add to the growing body of evidence that documents the role of gender bias in driving women out of science careers. A 2014 study found that both men and women were twice as likely to hire a man for a job that required math. When you lump all women from all demographics in together, they collectively have to work up until 2 April 2019 before they earn as much as white men did in 2018 .
Given current and projected demographic trends, it is of considerable importance to learn more about this underserved group. Because there is so little in the literature concerning Latina workers, the decision was made to conduct exploratory research using qualitative data collection methods.
Many Latina/o clients have makeshift altars with religious artifacts in their homes where they pray the rosary daily (a rosary is a string of beads; some say a prayer per bead as a way to be closer to God or a saint). When counseling these clients, it is best to remember how important their faith is and how much of an impact it has on their lives and the decisions they make daily. Having hospital patient navigators that follow patients from diagnosis through treatment, making sure they keep appointments and helping them navigate a complicated healthcare system, can help women adhere to their treatment regimen. Bilingual navigators can improve communication between the surgeon and the oncologist and the woman , which helps reduce a woman’s level of anxiety. These differences have a major impact on a woman’s treatment options, side effects of treatment, and prognosis.
Understanding some of their traditions can help to build trust, connect with these clients and strengthen the counseling relationships. If you are counseling a Latina/o family or client who is grieving, talking about or suggesting the altar can help with the process. However, be sure to remember the origins of the family or client you are working with because different cultures in the Latina/o diaspora maintain different traditions. When working with the whole family, it may appear that the family is unresponsive to the counseling process.
Though 85% of incarcerated youth are boys, girls makeup a much higher proportion of those incarcerated for the lowest level offenses. Thirty-eight percent of youth incarcerated for status offenses are girls. The proportion of imprisoned women convicted of a drug offense has increased from 12% in 1986 to 25% in 2017.
Having Latina/o clients understand the counseling process and what it entails can make all the difference in building good rapport. They listened to me and allowed me to feel what I felt, regardless of the situation.
” Another remembered a comment a professor made about how she would know all about rats because she came from an urban area. “Everyone laughed,” she said, and no one understood why she was offended. Experimental social psychologists have documented this type of bias over and over again in college labs, but this is the first time someone has taken that experimental literature and asked women whether it describes their experience in actual workplaces. We conducted in-depth interviews with 60 female scientists and surveyed 557 female scientists, both with help from the Association for Women in Science. These studies provide an important picture of how gender bias plays out in everyday workplace interactions.

Ensuring this population has access to good jobs and the social safety net is critical to addressing economic inequality. The term Hispanic was first used by http://www.copenhagensoulband.dk/2020/03/29/unusual-report-uncovers-the-fake-techniques-of-dominican-girl/ the U.S. government in the 1970s after Mexican American and other Hispanic organizations lobbied the federal government to collect data on the population.
As an exploratory qualitative effort, this current study is clearly limited in scope. However, it is hoped that the findings presented in this article will raise the awareness of social services practitioners and researchers regarding the considerable needs of this wholly underserved population.
Counselors should be as patient as possible, however, because family members may be waiting for their head of household to start and lead the conversation. The key is to treat and work with the family as a unit because that is how they might live their life traditionally. Most families live in multigenerational households that include parents, siblings and grandparents. Sometimes extended family members may also reside in the home at one point or another.
Brazilian women are thus Latina , whereas Spanish women are Hispanic . As Brazil and Spain are not disaggregated as Hispanic origin options in the Current Population Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, it is not possible to distinguish between Hispanic women and Latinas in the dataset we used for our regression analysis.
The data were collapsed into these two broad abuse categories in order to provide meaningful estimates due to the small number of Latina women. The media’s hypersexualization of Latina women has associated their accents with being sexy, which hypersexualizes an entire language. A language is a method of communication, not a way to fulfill white desires. The television and movie industry in America is dominated by white men who often portray ethnic minorities from a white point of view. Specifically, Latin American women in the American mainstream media are exoticised and hypersexualized.
Researchers said these data can inform clinical practice and care for pregnant women during the coronavirus pandemic, and be used to better understand the prevalence of the virus in the community, and how socio-economic factors and inequities may affect its spread. The research team measured levels of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies to estimate rates of exposure to the novel coronavirus in pregnant women cared for at two Philadelphia hospitals. Your response to that comment seems to ignore the fact that not all latinx are Spanish speaking. Why do Hispanics love to ignore the existence of non-Spanish speaking latinas? The constant erasure of afro-Latinos and those of us who don’t come from Spanish speaking countries in these articles is horrendous.
